Because they are separate items with separate lead times, and the classic failure here is a storeroom full of bases and no lids. Quoting and packing them as a matched pair removes the possibility. It is unglamorous and it is the most useful thing we do on this product.

Will another supplier’s lid fit your base?

Usually not, however similar it looks. Sealing rims differ by fractions of a millimetre between tools, and a lid that nearly fits is worse than one that obviously does not, because it fails in transit rather than on the bench. If you are mixing suppliers, tell us and we will be honest about what will happen.
